Andreas Umland

Andreas Umland is a Policy Fellow at EPIK as well as an Analyst at the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies in the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and Associate Professor of Political Science at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He has previously  worked at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, Harvard’s Weatherhead Center, St. Antony’s College Oxford, Urals State University in Yekaterinburg, National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt, Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation (ІЄАС) and Ukrainian Institute for the Future (UIM) in Kyiv, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, and Institute of International Relations (UMV) in Prague.

He is co-editor of, among others, the books Russia Before the Full Scale War I-II (2025/26), Ukraine’s Decentralization (2024), Aspects of the Orange Revolution III-V (2007), and Fascism Past and Present, West and East (2006). His articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Politico, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Financial Times, Journal of Democracy, European Political Science, Post-Soviet Affairs, Europe-Asia Studies, The Russian Review, Harvard International Review, and other outlets.

Umland holds an AM in Political Science from Stanford, MPhil in Russian and East European Studies from Oxford, Diploma in Politology & DrPhil in History from the Free University of Berlin, and PhD in Politics from Cambridge.

Areas of expertise: Ukrainian and Russian domestic and foreign affairs, German Ostpolitik, fascism and the far right, post-Soviet higher education, Soviet history.
