Andrea Marchesetti is a political analyst focusing on sanctions, cyber and international security issues.
He previously worked as an analyst at the Italian embassy in London (2013-2024). He also worked for a think tank, a scientific pressure group and a political party in London, Brussels and Rome.
Andrea’s work about contemporary economic statecraft has been published by the Council on Geostrategy and RUSI. He is also doing archival research on UK economic warfare in the 1930s-1960s.
Andrea’s EPIK fellowship will examine the origins and aims of Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” and international support for them, through interviews with experts and policymakers.
As a military strategy, long-range strikes are sometimes described as “strategic weapons”, but their ways are unclear: do they aim to bring about elite collapse? to foment popular unrest? or to curtail state revenue?
As an economic warfare doctrine, “long-range sanctions” herald the integration of kinetic and non-kinetic means (sabotage, cyber, diplomacy). Are there lessons for peacetime economic statecraft in other European countries?
While in Kyiv, he is also rowing with the Central Sports Club of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (CSK ZSU).
